These pieces were created during the height of the COVID epidemic. Because of the extreme contradictions and conflicts during that time, I felt a need for protection from the toxic environment. I imagined black shields with holes that would serve as psychic protection inviting vulnerability and light. Inspired by creation stories, my black disks are backlit by light boxes, as a reminder that there is a connection between light and darkness. Even in the worst situation and isolation, there is always going to be some possibility of light, some little stars that are trying to come through. Both light and darkness are part of an existential dialectic that is in constant conversation.
